Frequently Asked Questions — Drug & Alcohol Testing Consortium

Everything carriers ask us about FMCSA/DOT compliance.

What is a drug & alcohol testing consortium?

It’s a pool managed by a third-party administrator (C/TPA) that places your drivers into a shared random-testing pool, as required by US FMCSA/DOT regulations. Profirm acts as your consortium and runs the whole program.

Do I have to belong to a consortium?

If you or your drivers operate a commercial vehicle requiring a CDL into the US, yes. As soon as you have a USDOT number, a drug & alcohol testing program — including consortium enrollment — is a prerequisite: without it you fail the FMCSA new-entrant safety audit. Even a single owner-operator must belong to a consortium for random testing.

What are the required random testing rates?

The FMCSA currently requires an annual rate of 50% for drugs and 10% for alcohol, based on the number of drivers in the pool.

What is the FMCSA Clearinghouse?

It’s a US federal database that records commercial drivers’ drug and alcohol violations. As your C/TPA, Profirm performs the annual and pre-employment queries and reports violations there.

How much does a consortium cost?

Pricing depends mainly on the number of drivers. Request a free quote — we give you a clear price, no obligation.

What happens if I’m not compliant?

FMCSA penalties can reach $16,000 USD per violation, and the carrier is responsible. That’s exactly why we run the program from A to Z for you.

Does this apply if I only drive in Canada?

FMCSA/DOT requirements target carriers operating into the US. If you drive there, even occasionally, they apply. Contact us and we’ll confirm your situation.

How do I enroll and how long does it take?

Fill out the form or call us at 450-245-0005. We handle the paperwork and enroll you quickly, often the same day.
